Brian's Third Drawing Class - Perspective Drawing

Brian’s Third Drawing Class – Perspective Drawing

Today began by a drawing session with Brian. The seminar was focused on perspective drawing. We drew a line sketch of a chair which was positioned in the middle of the room. My first view was looking directly at it. My second view of it was a sideways, slightly left position. We followed the principle of the object having a vanishing point. This was in proportion to our eye level and horizon. I learnt where and when to use parallel and converging lines. As your eye level moved, so would the positioning of the lines. We also discussed the box method where the object would fit into a cube. Because the chair was below my eye level the chair would go inside the cube. To check whether the drawing was accurate I drew perspective lines on it. You can also hold your pen and finger up in the air and compare with the object after closing one eye to measure distances. Outstretch your arm to get an accurate representation.

Our self-directed work for this week was to draw six household objects by using a minimum of three media. Once was a  line drawing and the other five were to be three-dimensional. The ‘Objective is to find out about how different media behave together / how expressive some are compared with others / how comfortable you are with each one / and to explore the technical side of drawing, thinking in the line drawing about scale, proportion and perspective; and in the 3D information about tonal relationships (look carefully) and appropriate colour mixtures.’
