What is Feedback?

What is Feedback?

I typed ‘what is feedback’ into google and it came up with the following;

  1. information about reactions to a product, a person’s performance of a task, etc. which is used as a basis for improvement.
  2. the modification or control of a process or system by its results or effects, for example in a biochemical pathway or behavioural response.

Feedback is a very important process in which useful information on an idea/object is gained which enables you to progress. It can come in many different forms, such as;

Formative – this feedback is to track your progress and give tips in how to improve or what is done well.

Summative – this is usually given at the end of your task once it is completed. It is normally more formal and looks at your project overall.

Self – here you will look at your own work and reflect upon yourself.

Peer – this can include feedback off your friend/someone unknown or from a group discussion.

It is important to gain someone else’s viewpoint rather than your own as it helps eliminate bias – such as being too nice or harsh on yourself. They will also pick up on points that you might not have thought about. However sometimes it is tough to give feedback to someone else as you don’t want to upset them if your find something negative. It is important to give constructive criticism as being too ‘nice’ will not be beneficial to the person as they will not understand their errors to be able to improve.

In today’s theory session we peer assessed eachother’s blogs and looked at negative and positive aspects. This was helpful as I not only gained information on what was good or what could be improved about my blog, but I also got an insight into how other people were writing their blogs and what type of information they were including. I can also give myself feedback by referring to the assessment sheet and looking at what is to be expected during this topic.
