Interview a Building
Today’s seminar began by discussing in small groups what we had found by visiting 32 Cambridge Street and researching Sheffield Retail Quarter document:
- Run by Sheffield city council and focuses on the centre of town.
- It is a chance for local communities to voice their thoughts and opinions
- It consists of the area around Barkers Pool, Pinstone street and Moorehead
- It will bring in jobs, visitors, choices and links, such as in transport, businesses and the city’s layout.

- on a slight hill next to an alleyway. 3 storeys of windows. buildinga attached to the right, near a road, pavement parking outside, behind the largest department store john Lewis. red bricks, bethel sunday schoolat the top, windows around side, triangular roof – pediment, graffitti on the walls outside, slanted road on the alley also. single door on the left of the building, two small chimneys at the top. on same road as a few restaurants and small shops. view from front window is of JL’s large concrete walls. Distribution kept at a low by building the new places in phases. Dina has knocked through to 32.

- Its shape and size – dimensions.
- Where the stairs and doors are located. Are there any bathrooms?
- When was it built?
- Who was the architect?
- Why was it bought?
- When did it change ownership?
- How many rooms does it have?
- What are the interior regulations?
- Specification.
- What are/are there any health/safety hazards?
- What materials and joining methods were used in its construction?
- When was the extension?
- Does it have a backyard?
- What style is its architecture?
- Sustainability.
We also looked at research methods that we should use and what they involved – primary and secondary data.
