Reproduce, Interpret, Respond
In today’s seminar we looked at sketch models. They are a 3D form of a design idea and are useful for experimenting and inspiration for future designs or alterations.
Our task was to reproduce objects/spaces into a 3D sketch model in a certain amount of time. The first was a chair, the second was a building inspired by the pouring of wine into a glass, the third a contemporary building and the fourth a twisting bridge. I found it was often easier to create curves than 90 degree angles! It was interesting to see how everyone had interpreted the forms to create a variety of sketch models. The models were not wholly accurate but the main idea is to put across the idea on your paper.
Models can also be created from paintings. We looked at Kandinsky’s ‘Circle in a Circle’ and Mondrian’s ‘Composition with Gray and Light Brown’ and used the form and lines to create 3D elements with different heights and shapes.
We then watched a skateboarding video and using a pen and paper drew how we saw the skater to move. Using these shapes I created another model.
I went away and found 6 paintings and patterns and using these as inspiration I made some models. I used white paper for all my models because I wanted to experiment how one material could be manipulated in different ways.
