Brian’s Fifth Drawing Class – People

Today’s class was all about drawing people. He began by drawing quick sketches of people using the common principles of human measurements – for example the average person is 7.5 of their own heads in height and their arm span also equals their height. We copied what he was drawing. He drew circles at points where there were joints and joined them using simple lines. It is harder than it looks to get proportion correct until a few tries. After we grasped this we moved on to drawing people who were mid-movement. I drew people walking and someone riding a bike. The angles of the lines were different which created them look like they were moving. They were also drawn from different viewpoints – i.e. not looking directly at them from front elevation. Lacey also modeled for us sitting down and we drew here using the same methods.

Our self-directed work was to take a picture of the silhouetted people above the lifts in the Owen building and draw them. We then had to add finer details to them, such as clothes and colour to two. The second part was to draw a city scene which vanished off into the distance. We then had to draw on people using different hierarchy’s of scale where the further away someone is the smaller they are and the less detailed they become.
