Mick Scherdel, HML Lecture 1

This lecture is one of the first of a series by Mick Scherdel who is from an architectural company known as HML. He will teach us about technical matters and key construction elements.

Today was all about walls.

Why build walls? for/to;

The way they look and are created define the building. They turn concepts in structures. The properties of walls define how its used. Can be timber or steel frames.

Ikea is a powerful example of how walls can influence a flow of the building. You are forced to follow a route around the shop and see everything they have on offer.

Characteristics and attributes of designing a wall;

  • height
  • thickness
  • shape
  • materials
  • texture
  • strength
  • dimensions
  • aesthetics
  • durability
  • insulation
  • ergonomics
  • water resistance
  • acoustics
  • lifespan

You must consider

  • wall loadings (its impact),

  • its foundation
  • maintenance
  • fire protection
  • security
  • flexibility
  • hygiene
